Showers Tuesday; April Fools' Snow
Good afternoon folks! We have a shot of rain coming our way and temps will cool down to below normal levels, but only for Tuesday. High pressure moves in behind the rain on Wednesday, allowing us to warm back into the 60's, peaking to low 70's by the weekend. A round of high elevation snow is likely Wednesday morning (seriously, no April Fools' joke) but any accumulations will be held to the highest ridgelines above 5500'. Other than sunshine and warming temps, the only notable bit for the remainder of the week is a chance for patchy frost Thursday and Friday mornings.
Tuesday starts out the day with showers developing around sunrise, first for the escarpment, then filling in for the rest of region by the late morning hours. Showers may be heavy at times and thunderstorm chances remain low, but rainfall totals will be healthy as all of SW NC looks to pick up an inch, possibly up to 1.5" along the SC state line. Temps will be noticeably cooler Tuesday as they only reach the mid 40's - low 50's depending upon elevation, falling to the low - upper 30's overnight into Wednesday.
As the low pressure system moves away from the region, NW flow will take over during the early morning hours and light - moderate snow will fall above 4000' (give or take several hundred feet), with a better chance for the snow the closer you are to the TN line. Accumulating snow is likely above 5500' with a light dusting up to an inch, which is nothing to write home about but it will be April Fool's so perhaps most folks wont belief until they see it. All of this winds down before noon and elsewhere across SW NC cloud cover will be clearing the region, allowing sunshine to return but temps only make it to the low 40's - mid 50's depending upon elevation. Add in NW winds around 10 - 20mph across the lower elevations and it wont be a warm afternoon like we've enjoyed as of late. Winds calm down after sunset and with clear skies overhead temps will dip into the low - mid 30's across the area, prompting frost to form after midnight.
Thursday will start the day on a cold note but temps will climb to the low 50's - mid 60's under mostly sunny skies, pushing even further on Friday to the upper 50's - low 70's (under more sunshine). Patchy frost is possible Friday morning as temps dip into the upper 30's - low 40's Thursday night, only dipping into the low - mid 40's Friday night.
We'll stop here and circle back sometime Thursday morning with an update. Enjoy the spring weather this week, stay dry!
