Pleasant Sunday; Muggy Monday

Good afternoon folks! Rainfall totals are below our forecasted totals for Friday into Saturday evening with a few locations hitting the 0.75" mark, but most of the region only picked up 0.25 - 0.5" of rain over the 36 hour period. Drier air is moving into the region as of Saturday afternoon and we'll notice shower coverage scaling back to isolated showers tonight, extending through the day on Sunday. It won't be fall - like but we should end the weekend on a nice note with more sun than clouds overhead, followed by a pattern change overnight into Monday. Moisture levels increase, setting the stage for another round of showers throughout the day with a slightly cooler, but still muggy afterno

Showers Sat setup Sunshine Sun

Good afternoon folks! Hurricane Laura, now Tropical Storm Laura, was an historic storm with wind speeds tied for 5th all time for land-falling hurricanes (150mph), combined with catastrophic surge along the SW Louisiana coast and inland as far as 30 - 40 miles! Remnants of Laura will be sliding to our north early Saturday, close enough to bring us strong winds and when combined with high moisture levels and SW flow, we expect a health round of rain to fall Friday evening through Saturday late afternoon. Drier air moves in Sunday and will bring us mostly sunny skies with very low rain chances, however this will be short lived as moisture returns Monday, pushing rain chances slightly higher t

Dry-ish Wednesday; WET Fri & Sat

Good afternoon folks! All eyes are on Hurricane Laura as rapid intensification is expected over the next 24 hours before making landfall along or nearby the TX/LA state line. As of Tuesday afternoon the models push remnants of Laura just to our north Friday into Saturday and while (for the moment) our region looks to avoid high winds, we are likely to end up with a wet start to the weekend. Shower chances return Thursday but only scattered coverage is expected, increasing to widespread by Friday night, winding down later in the day on Saturday. Drier air is slated to move into the region Sunday, setting up a dry and cooler forecast Sunday into next Tuesday. We recommend getting outside on We

Showers Mon/Tues; Dry by Wednesday

Good afternoon folks! Our previous forecast of a dry and mostly sunny start to the work and school week evaporated over the weekend as the overall setup has shifted just enough to keep shower chances alive for both Monday and Tuesday. It seems we'll deal with more clouds than sun on Monday, alongside scattered showers and thunderstorms, followed by a slow decline in both cloud cover and shower coverage on Tuesday. This sets up Wednesday to possibly be the driest day of the week, sandwiched in between a declining upper level ridge to our southeast and a fairly strong high pressure system off the Southeast coast. Where things go beyond Wednesday is not very clear as we wait and see how Tropica

Weekend Cooperates; Slightly Warmer

Good afternoon folks! Quite a bit of rain has fallen since Wednesday morning, with a report of 5" along the escarpment out of Rosman and a whopping 5.46" in Cullowhee from a heavy downpour. Elsewhere across SW NC rainfall totals are in the 1 - 2" range for a good portion of the region, with several stations closing in on 3" across the Southern Highlands Plateau. We'll pick up more rain this evening but the widespread coverage should scale back beginning Saturday, with a round of rain likely Saturday night and another step down in coverage on Sunday. The upper level trough that has been feeding moisture into the region will weaken and lift out of the area this weekend, followed by a fairly fl

Soggy Thursday and Friday

Good afternoon folks! Showers and thunderstorms are moving across the landscape this afternoon and we expect Thursday and Friday to be more active than Wednesday in terms of both coverage and rainfall amounts. An upper level trough is setting up to our west in the TN Valley and a weak front will migrate into our region, creating a nice setup for region wide showers and thunderstorms Thursday and Friday. This trough weakens and eventually flattens out during the day on Saturday, but not before another round of scattered showers with coverage and rainfall intensities noticeably less than Friday. By Sunday we'll be back to the classic August setup of mostly sunny skies, coupled with a few isola

Sunny Tuesday; Muggy by Wednesday

Good afternoon folks! Conditions are almost perfect for mid August this Monday afternoon with ample sunshine overhead, low-ish dewpoints, and minimal shower activity across SW NC. We'll continue to enjoy additional sunshine on Tuesday, with perhaps a half day of full sunshine on Wednesday as moisture begins to creep back into the region. An upper level trough will position itself just west of the region early Wednesday, providing a nice setup for SW flow to usher in high moisture levels and this translates to a return of increased cloud cover and scattered to widespread shower coverage for the end of the week. Scattered showers will develop Wednesday, but the best action will occur Thursday

Much Drier Sunday into Tuesday

Good afternoon folks! Showers and thunderstorms are moving across the region Friday afternoon and we'll experience another round Saturday afternoon, followed by a frontal passage Saturday evening that will usher in drier air for Sunday. This drier air will translate to mostly sunny skies and isolated showers to end the weekend, with this fair-ish weather continuing into Tuesday. An upper level trough will swing nearby the region around Wednesday or Thursday of next week, bringing with it a return to scattered showers and increased cloud cover. We'll pick up another quarter - half inch of rain across the region on Saturday and all of SW NC should get in on the action, with a few spots coming

Soggy Friday and Saturday

Good afternoon folks! We're beginning to shift into the wetter portion of the forecast as moisture begins to surge into the region, setting the stage for a wet end to the week and start of the weekend. Scattered showers and thunderstorms under mostly cloudy skies make up most of the action on Thursday and keep in mind that some of these will be heavy rain producers that may move very slow across the landscape. Coverage expands to all of SW NC on Friday and Saturday, with Friday being the wettest day as an upper level wave swings nearby the region, setting the stage for rainfall totals around one inch by late Friday night. We'll begin to dry out slightly on Sunday with coverage scaling back t

Muggy with Daily Showers

Good afternoon folks! Our previous forecast of a mostly sunny day for Monday with a few thunderstorms isn't panning out too well as we deal with mostly cloudy skies and scattered showers this afternoon. The overall pattern is holding up as expected for the rest of the week with an uptick in afternoon showers and increasing cloud cover with each passing day, helping to bring temps down a few degrees below normal by the end of the work week. Tuesday and Wednesday feature scattered thunderstorms after midday, some of which will be heavy downpours and coverage is likely to extend into the late evening hours. Shower coverage increases slightly for Thursday and Friday, with mostly cloudy skies ove

A Short Reprieve this Weekend

Good afternoon folks! Forecast is still on track for the weekend and early next week as we expect a reduction in shower activity beginning Saturday that will linger into Monday, with temps climbing a few degrees above normal by Sunday. The westerly flow and upper level ridge that is providing us with a reprieve from the constant and daily shower activity will break down slightly on Tuesday as a front nears region. This will translate into an uptick in shower activity by Wednesday, possibly becoming widespread with temps a touch cooler due to increasing cloud cover. All in all, nothing major is on the horizon for the next five days, just a discussion on how long this much deserved break will

Scattered Storms Thursday & Friday

Good afternoon folks! The forecast has changed slightly from our previous discussion with an uptick in shower activity Thursday and Friday, however the weekend and beyond will remain the same as we still expect more sun than clouds alongside isolated thunderstorms. Temps will be reasonable for early August as they hold to the low 80's Thursday and level out to the mid 80's Friday through Monday/Tuesday. All in all, we will slowly be returning to a normal late summer time setup as August and early September tend to be the driest months out of any given year. Thursday and Friday remain muggy as southwest flow aloft continues pushing moisture into the region and when combined with an upper leve

A Slow Decline in Shower Coverage

Good afternoon folks! The main event is underway as Tropical Storm Isaias continues to move toward the SC/NC line border along the coast, aiming for a late evening landfall, possibly as a category 1 hurricane. Our neck of the woods is dealing with strong, scattered thunderstorms and showers as the overall flow from Isaias interacts with an upper level trough and stalled front; plus terrain influence along the escarpment. We'll continue to experience showers through Monday night, winding down early Tuesday morning, with another round of scattered showers Tuesday afternoon under passing clouds. By Wednesday the upper level trough will be swinging a few disturbances our way, prompting scattered

Soggy Monday; Pleasant by Mid Week

Good afternoon folks! As of late Saturday afternoon it looks like Hurricane Isaias will not strengthen much further and the forecast track by the NHC shows it hugging the eastern coastline till roughly the SC/NC line, arriving late Monday, exiting during the day Tuesday. This will keep our region in play for scattered to widespread showers Sunday evening through Monday night and then its back to a normal summer time setup of sunshine and pop up thunderstorms Tuesday through Friday. Temps will be comfortable for August as they hold to the low - mid 80's each afternoon across the valleys, with Monday being the coolest day of the week due to cloudy skies. Sunday will wrap up the weekend on a qu
