Gorgeous Sunday; Upper 80's Wednesday

Good afternoon folks! With Saturday already in the rear view mirror we'll turn our sights to the end of the weekend and into early next week, as this time frame will feature the best setup before we turn up the heat on Wednesday. Sunday and Monday will be downright gorgeous as sunny skies sit overhead, coupled with low dewpoints and below normal temps. By Tuesday we'll notice a shift from the NW to the SE as moisture slowly works its way back into the region, alongside increasing temps that should climb to above average levels. Temps peak on Wednesday and isolated showers return to the region, followed by a slight uptick in coverage as we enter late next week; temps will remain above average

Sunshine and Cooler Temps

Good afternoon folks! We are almost done with this long stretch of daily showers and muggy conditions as we expect a frontal passage to sweep through on Saturday, helping to usher in sunny conditions for the end of the weekend and early part of next week. Even the middle to late part of next week looks relatively dry, with only late afternoon pop up showers and moisture levels should be more bearable than we've been dealing with as of late. An upper level low is expected to swing nearby the area Friday and with instability on the rise, we expect another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms. A front will move through early in the day Saturday, accompanied by a round of light - moderat

Muggy through Friday; Sunny Sunday!

Good afternoon folks! You don't have to look at the data to feel how much moisture is in the air as we continue to deal with muggy conditions, but there is light on the horizon as a frontal passage Saturday looks to scour out enough moisture to bring back dry and pleasant conditions. In the meantime we'll continue with a muggy and wet setup Wednesday into Saturday, with several rounds of rain, possibly heavy at times. There remains uncertainty with the track of the low pressure system off the coast of Florida and this may impact the forecast as we could experience scattered light - moderate showers or widespread heavy rain Wednesday night into Thursday. The low moves out of the area Thursday

Daily Showers Monday through Friday

Good afternoon folks! We're halfway through the Memorial Day Weekend and it looks like we'll continue to experience scattered showers and thunderstorms each afternoon Monday through the end of the week, likely extending into next weekend. Each day this week provides a slightly different setup and no one day is a complete washout but the setup does not look good for those who have outdoor plans or work. This wet pattern is brought to us by a backdoor front moving into the region Sunday evening, lingering nearby throughout the day on Memorial Day, giving way to easterly flow Tuesday and Wednesday and finally capped off by a passing front Thursday into Friday that could stall and keep showers g

Showers Friday; Summer-like Weekend

Good afternoon folks! The rain event is finally winding down as we enter the evening hours on Thursday, however we'll experience another round of rain Friday afternoon that is loosely tied to the departing upper level low. The highest amounts across the Carolinas are throughout the NW NC escarpment where upwards of 10" fell in several spots, while closer to home we saw max totals in the 5 - 6" range (Rosman at 6.14" is the highest for SW NC). Most of SW NC picked up anywhere from 2 - 3.5" of rain which is roughly a half inch shy of forecasted totals and thankfully flooding was held to a minimum for our neck of the woods. The upper level low is slowly lifting northeast and as it does so Thurs

Heavy Rain Continues; Chilly Wednesday

Good afternoon folks! Things sure have been wet across the area but it could be worse, as our neighbors in the NW corner of the state are running a 1 - 2" lead on us, with 6.15" reported from Jonas Ridge within 24 hours (Mon AM - Tues AM)!!! This area will pick up another 5 - 6" by Friday, putting a foot of rain into play and leading to localized flooding and possible debris flows/landslides, but I should stress this is not for our area but NW NC. Focusing on our region, we have picked up 1 - 3" of rain depending upon location from Sunday night into Tuesday morning; highest amounts are along the escarpment, while lower amounts are tied up in the more central locations (valleys). The heavy do

Four Days of Rain; Cooler Temps

Good afternoon folks! We hope you soaked up the sunshine this weekend because starting Monday we are in for roughly four days of rain, totaling 3 - 4" for most of SW NC, with the escarpment area picking up north of 6 - 7". Temps will be noticeably cooler Tuesday through Thursday but not chilly as they come close to the 70°F mark across the lower elevations. All of this excess rain is made possible by an upper level low that will sit just to our west Tuesday through Thursday, spinning moisture into the region from the south and east. With so much rain over a 4 day period, localized flooding is a good bet beginning late Tuesday, so be sure to keep an eye on the weather as we head into the midd

Gorgeous Weekend: Cooler by Tuesday

Good afternoon folks! Summer like conditions are upon us and the weekend ahead looks fantastic as temps push into the low - mid 80's across the valleys! Shower chances slowly increase with each passing day but coverage remains fairly low through Sunday, with the only threat being pop up showers closer to sunset on Sunday. Scattered thunderstorms develop Monday afternoon and continue into the evening hours as a front sweeps across the region. An upper level low moves into the area Tuesday and will wobble overhead for the next several days, bringing back below normal temps as light - moderate showers pepper the landscape Tuesday through Thursday. This upper level low is likely to exit just in

Early Summer Conditions this Weekend

Good afternoon folks! Looking at the remainder of the week it seems temps will warm up to early summer levels starting Thursday, peaking this weekend to the low - mid 80's and cooling down to normal levels by the middle of next week. Some clouds will stream overhead Thursday and clear out by Friday, with a chance for isolated showers on Saturday as a low pressure system develops off the coast and drags a weak front through the region. Instability increases Sunday and a few thunderstorms are likely, but the main event will be on Monday as a front crosses the region and takes advantage of the increasing instability with scattered thunderstorms throughout the afternoon hours. Fair weather with

Winter's Last Hurrah; Frost Tonight

Good afternoon folks! Snow fell once again across the Northern Mountains this morning, with a dusting recorded atop Beech Mountain; nothing confirmed for the Southern Mountains. We are still dealing with a chance of frost tonight for the area but the pattern will soon change as early summer conditions arrive by Friday, setting up a summer like weekend with only isolated shower chances. There is a slight chance for light showers late Tuesday into Wednesday, however coverage will be isolated and we'll still enjoy time outside as temps push back into the 70's! Monday night will be cold for mid May with temps bottoming out to the low - mid 30's across the region as clear skies gradually give way

Nightly Freezing Temps into Tuesday

Good afternoon folks! Another round of ridgeline snow fell last night above 5500', although totals were under an inch and a dusting in many spots; still wild to see snow anytime during May. Snowshoe Mountain picked up 3"! We'll deal with another March-like afternoon today, followed by a widespread freeze tonight as temps plummet to the upper 20's - low 30's. Sunday pushes temps to roughly 10 degrees warmer than today as more sunshine hangs overhead, cooling down slightly on Monday due to NW flow setting up shop in the wake of a weak frontal passage late Sunday. High clouds stream overhead Tuesday and temps moderate a bit, continuing their rise into Wednesday which is when we expect to return

Snow Friday; Frosty Temps into Monday

Good evening folks! It's May 7th and we are still talking about snow in the forecast! Yesterday's snowfall was gorgeous with half dollar sized flakes falling close to the TN line, where an official 1" was recorded on Beech Mountain, while we documented a skiff of snow atop Cataloochee Ski Area. We're in for a chilly night tonight with patchy frost possible for the valleys, followed by a frontal passage later in the day Friday that brings us region wide rain and eventually, another round of ridgeline snow. Temps will remain well below normal tomorrow and Saturday, taking till at least Sunday to return to the 60's, however the threat for frost sticks around all the way into Tuesday morning of

Storms Tuesday; High Elevation Snow

Good afternoon folks! It's Tuesday and we are watching the TN valley for another round of strong to severe storms that will push across the region this evening, with shower activity scaling back significantly after midnight. Wednesday ushers in an upper level trough and NW flow will setup shop, translating to isolated rain showers across the lower elevations and light snow showers above 4000'; light accumulations possible above 5500'. Thursday starts the day with temps in the 30's and even as high pressure moves overhead, ensuring sunny skies all day, it will still feel chilly as temps run roughly 5 - 7 degrees below normal. A cold front arrives sometime Friday afternoon and pushes a line of

Showers Tuesday; Cooler by Thursday

Good morning folks! We're closing out the weekend today on a very warm note with temps pushing into the low 80's this afternoon! Showers will sweep the region with a few rumbles of thunder this evening as a front crosses the area, followed by isolated showers throughout the day on Monday. This front will stall across the region Monday and Tuesday, with a second wave of showers moving through on Tuesday that will be stronger than the 1st round. Widespread showers are likely Tuesday afternoon into the evening hours and shower chances will linger into Wednesday, but coverage scales back to only isolated showers. Some sun will mix in on Wednesday as an upper level trough sets up shop to our nort
