More Snow Friday; Warm by Sunday

Good morning folks! Many of us woke up to snow falling, on the ground or both and although we called for snow to fall with light accumulations on the ridgelines, we did not expect the numerous reports of a light dusting up to a half inch; heck, even Highlands had accumulating snow! The snow is over as of the mid morning hours and we will be dealing with a cold yet sunny day, with a blustery setup that will make it feel much colder than what we see on the thermometer. Moisture moves back into the region early Friday morning, with light snow once again falling across the area. We only expect light accumulations for the favored NW flow locations, however another trace to a skiff of snow is poss

Low 60's Tuesday; Upper 30's Thursday

Good morning folks! It's Tuesday morning and we are watching showers exit to the east, with high clouds continuing across the Southeast. We'll enjoy a break in the rain today but high clouds stick around, while temps soar to the low 60's across the valleys. A front returns Wednesday afternoon, bringing with it spotty showers to start and light snow to end the event, mainly for the higher elevation ridgelines closer to the TN line. Colder air pours into the region as the front exits to the east, setting up a sunny but very cold Thursday with temps below the 40°F mark across the lower elevations. Friday and Saturday keep below normal temps going with a second frontal passage late Friday that i

Showers Monday; Low 60's Tuesday

Good afternoon folks! We're wrapping up the weekend on a dry and warm note, but we'll start off the work week with showers moving into the area. A few flakes will fall across the higher elevations above 4500' to start the event, but all precip will fall as rain past midday. Heavy and widespread showers move through the area Monday night and showers wind down through the morning hours on Tuesday, with temps peaking for the week Tuesday afternoon. An upper level trough swings a second front through the region Wednesday and snow will fall on the back-end late Wednesday night into Thursday morning; mainly a high elevation event along the TN line. Cold weather sets up shop Thursday and holds stro

Sunny and Warm this Weekend

Good morning folks! Yesterday's snowfall was an overall disappointment to the vast majority of folks living in SW NC as the higher elevations seemed to be the only spot where snow accumulated. After pouring over the local observations from the NWS and social media, it seems our SNOWCAST Map verified for the those throughout the Southern Highlands Plateau where Highlands picked up an official 3.8" (max forecast amount was 4"); numerous locations nearby also reached the 3" mark. With that being said, Bryson City, Franklin, Sylva, and Cullowhee all were left out of the action as temps never really supported accumulation, with snow melting on contact with the ground; trace amounts recorded for a

Region Wide Snow Thursday

Good morning folks! We are less than 24 hours out from a region wide snow event, but this will be a rather light event for SW NC, although the higher elevations above 5000' will cash in with 3" plus totals. The real winners will be somewhere along the NC coast, perhaps closer to SE Virginia, as their totals could eclipse 6", with some models pointing to near a foot! Back to our neck of the woods, we only expect a general 1 - 3" of snow across the region, however this event will be a mix of factors that include elevation dependent, location, and duration. Things should wind down late Thursday afternoon, with sunshine moving back in on Friday, followed by a generally dry weekend with a slight

Wet Tuesday and Wednesday

Good afternoon folks! Sunny skies sit overhead this afternoon but the pattern will soon change as moisture pushes into the region from the southwest, beginning sometime this evening. Enough moisture will make its way into the region tonight for isolated showers to develop, becoming scattered by Tuesday morning. A cold front will cross the region Tuesday during the late evening hours and increase shower coverage to widespread, with showers continuing into the morning hours on Wednesday. It looks like rainfall totals will remain under an inch for SW NC and although the escarpment area comes close, this will be a light rain event. Colder air rushes in Wednesday afternoon, allowing rain to kick

Showers Return Late Monday

Good afternoon folks! We are enjoying a sunny day across the region and fair weather will continue into Sunday, although high clouds will move in tonight to setup a partly sunny end to the weekend. Clouds clear out late Sunday night but fill back in early Monday afternoon as moisture increases across the Southeast, setting the stage for isolated showers closer to sunset on Monday. Isolated showers continue into Tuesday, ramping up to widespread by the late afternoon/early evening hours as a cold front approaches the region. The front is expected to cross the region Tuesday night and showers will wind down Wednesday morning. Confidence in the forecast goes downhill starting Thursday as the mo

Finally, a Dry Weekend!!!

Good morning folks! We are watching the rain event wind down as we near the midday hour on Wednesday and over the past 24 hours, the highest rainfall total is from Newfound Gap with 2.91" Elsewhere across SW NC totals are generally above 1.5", with a handful of sites closer to the GA and SC state lines just a hair under the 2" mark. We'll see shower coverage scale back to the TN line as the day moves along and perhaps some light snow showers along the highest peaks overnight, but nothing to write home about. Friday will be sunny, windy and cold, and Saturday hits the repeat button. The forecast has changed for Sunday since we last spoke with rainfall chances dropping and high clouds passing

Heavy Rains again Wednesday Night

Good Morning Folks! It's Tuesday morning and the rain continues, however we will see a lull in activity this afternoon and overnight, with light spotty showers making up the action after the front crosses the region early this afternoon. This front will hang up across the Carolinas tonight and slowly move north tomorrow as a warm front, while at the same time a surface low pressure system moves out of the Gulf South region and marches toward the TN valley. This will setup another round of light - moderate showers Wednesday afternoon, mainly due to upglide atop the stalled front. The bulk of the heavy rain with this second round will stay to our west in the TN valley, however we'll still deal

Another Wet Week Ahead; Sunny Friday

Good morning folks! This past week has seen quite a lot of action with 4 - 8" of rain falling across the region Tuesday into Friday, followed by two rounds of snow, one Friday morning and a much more widespread event Saturday morning, which brought most of us 1 - 4" of snow. We will certainly enjoy the short lived reprieve we have today, however more rain returns Monday morning and becomes heavy late Monday into Tuesday morning. Shower coverage will remain scattered - widespread late Tuesday into Thursday, although the heaviest rain should fall sometime overnight into Tuesday; flooding is once again a concern. It seems sunshine returns Friday and the only silver lining to all of this rain is

Flooding, Snow, and Strong Winds

Friday 2/7/20 Afternoon Update: Took much longer than anticipated for us to provide an update, but we wanted to make sure the latest model runs matched our previous line of thinking. The forecast is still good to go and we expect snow to fall across the region, beginning sometime before or shortly after sunrise on Saturday. Elevations above 3000' will experience advisory level accumulating snow, anywhere from 2 - 3" depending upon how close you are to the TN, N GA and SC state lines, however the valleys should be able to squeak out a dusting up to an inch. Light to moderate snow will fall throughout the morning hours and begin to subside as we enter the mid - late afternoon hours, with the r

A Southern Soaker Tues - Thur

Good morning folks! It's Tuesday morning and we are watching scattered light showers dot the landscape as the rain event begins. Today's rain will be light and moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will pour into the region tomorrow morning, setting up heavy rain tomorrow afternoon that should continue into Thursday afternoon, eventually winding down for most of SW NC by Friday morning. There will be some wrap around moisture Friday that will keep precip falling along the TN line and rain will kick over to snow above 4500', but this should be a light round of snow that ends Friday afternoon. We are also keeping an eye on the models for a third round of precip that could move through late Saturday

Near 70°F Monday; Heavy Rain this Week

Good morning folks! Today and Monday will be downright gorgeous for early February and we highly recommend taking advantage of the sunshine and well above normal temps as a prolonged stretch of rain moves in Tuesday morning. This stretch of rain will start during the pre dawn hours Tuesday and wind down sometime Friday afternoon, with a backend round of snow for the TN line that extends into Saturday. We expect rainfall totals for all of SW NC to reach the 3" mark, however there will be a handful of locations along and near the escarpment and N GA line that will fall into the 4 - 5" range. Temps all the while will go from 16 - 20 degrees above normal on Monday to roughly 8 - 12 degrees above
