Shot of Snow Saturday; 60's Monday!

Good afternoon folks! We certainly didn't hit the nail on the head with the snowfall this morning, but it wasn't a swing and miss either, we simply botched the timing of the event and could have gone into more detail pertaining to location. Regardless, the event seemed to affect the southern portions of Macon, Jackson and Haywood counties, although areas near and along the TN line also picked up accumulating snow; heck, even Brevard and Hendersonville got in on the action with an inch! As of the early afternoon hours, the highest total for our region is out of Highlands with 2.2"; this was the official report to the NWS, however some pictures make us wonder if they eclipsed the 3" mark. Excu

High Elevation Snow Wed & Fri Night

Good afternoon folks! Here we are in the middle of the work and school week, tracking yet another round of precip that will bring us high elevation snow and a cold rain for the valleys Wednesday night into Thursday. This round of precip will be light, ending early Thursday morning and we'll enjoy a period of calm Thursday and most of the day Friday. Showers return late Friday afternoon and carry over into Saturday, wrapping up early Sunday morning and this setup will be similar in that the higher elevations experience snow while the rest of us in the valleys are stuck with a cold rain. We close out the weekend on a dry note and this is likely to roll into Monday, however the models show anot

Two Rounds of Ridgeline Snow

Good morning folks! As we type this discussion snow is falling across the highest ridgelines and snow levels will slowly move down in elevation throughout the day, stopping somewhere around 3500'. The NWS has issued a Winter Weather Advisory above 3500' for most of SW NC and it seems snowfall totals will range based on elevation, with the high range capping out around 6 - 7" for the Smokies. All of this precip moves east tonight and NW flow keeps a few snow showers along the TN line, but clearing skies will setup a sunny Tuesday. Moisture moves back in Wednesday afternoon, with another round of high elevation snow Wednesday night. Clouds and sun do a dance for Thursday and Friday, however co

Another Round of Ridgeline Snow

Good afternoon folks! Close to a half inch of freezing rain occurred above 5500' Friday morning and snow even fell later that afternoon, continuing into the morning hours on Saturday, with 1 - 2 inches of snow being reported out of Maggie Valley above 4500'; an extremely isolated event. For those interested in the recent rain event, totals ranged from 1 - 3" as expected, with the highest amounts along the SC state line and Lake Toxaway took home the prize for highest total at 3.11". Chilly temps and dry weather make up the rest of the afternoon, however the forecast has changed for Sunday with a high elevation snow event developing closer to sunset and continuing overnight into Monday. Light

A Wintry Mix and Cold Rain Combo

Good morning folks! We are tracking our next round of precip that is currently to our south and west, pushing northeast into the region this afternoon. Currently (midday Thursday) temps are struggling to rise above the 40's and some spotty snow may fall before the main event arrives, but the airmass in place is dry enough to keep this possibility quite low. Showers push into the region tonight and expand in coverage from the south to north, continuing into Friday with several inches of rain likely by the time the event winds down Friday late afternoon. As the front pushes east cold air advection will occur out of the NW, kicking rain over to snow for the TN line and this may continue into th

High Elevation Snow Friday

Good afternoon folks! We sure did drop the ball with the snow that fell yesterday morning into today, with the bulk of the action in Haywood County where several valley towns saw a dusting up to an inch and more as you moved closer to the TN line. Putting this forecasting mishap behind us, we'll focus on Wednesday into the weekend. Dry weather will continue into Wednesday and temps moderate a bit, followed by building clouds on Thursday and a frontal passage Friday morning. This front will bring us a round of snow and rain across the region, with minor accumulations for the higher elevations. The weekend starts out with more clouds than sun and lingering snowfall for the TN line, which may e

Sunny but Cold through Tuesday

Good morning folks! I had a family emergency yesterday and could not find the time to post a discussion, but I am back and ready to discuss the weather from Sunday into Thursday. Not much action during this timeframe as sunshine dominates the landscape, with the only headline being the cold snap. Temps eventually warm as the week progresses, pushing to a few degrees above normal by Wednesday. We are keeping an eye at the end of the work and school week for another round of rain and the details are still fuzzy, particularly the timing of the event as some models bring precip into our region Friday, others Saturday. All in all, a quiet start to the week with fair conditions continuing through

Colder Temps around the Corner

Good afternoon folks! The warmer days are behind us and looking ahead we'll find temps slowly declining with each passing day, bottoming out sometime Tuesday into Wednesday, with a return to near normal levels late next week. We have a round of rain moving through early Saturday morning, exiting late Saturday night, with sunshine on tap for Sunday. Dry but cold weather sets up shop Monday through Wednesday and Sunday will be chilly, but temps climb to normal levels whereas early next week will be below normal. There will be a window of wintry precip above 5000' early Saturday morning but everything kicks over to rain, so nothing to really watch there and the possibility for snow next Tuesday

Rain Saturday; Much Colder Sunday!

Good afternoon folks! Light showers continue to pepper the escarpment area Tuesday afternoon and shower activity will remain spotty overnight into Wednesday, with heavier rain moving through the region late Wednesday afternoon. We'll pick up another half inch across most of SW NC during the day Wednesday, with another quarter - half inch overnight into Thursday. Precip dries up Thursday morning and sunshine returns, with clouds slowly filling in as the day moves along on Friday. Showers return Friday and stick around the entire day on Saturday, fizzling out overnight with more sunshine on Sunday. Temps will go from well above average Wednesday to near normal but still above average Thursday

Rain Mon - Wed; Dry and Cooler Thursday

Good afternoon folks! We'll continue to deal with (or enjoy) well above normal temps Monday through Wednesday and although above normal temps stick around for Thursday and Friday, they wont be 15 - 18 degrees above normal, instead they only be 4 - 6 degrees above normal. Showers setup shop Monday and hang around till Wednesday, but this stretch of rain will be more of nuisance as only 1 - 3" is forecasted over the three day period, most of that falling along the N GA line. Thursday and Friday offer up a reprieve from the rain but much like the past six weekends, more rain is in the forecast; this also makes it eight of out the past nine weekends with measurable rain! All in all, more spring-

Heavy Rain Saturday Night

Good afternoon folks! The forecasted rainfall amounts from the WPC has dropped since we last spoke, with several inches of rain likely for the escarpment area this weekend, while the interior portion of SW NC picks up an inch or two at most. This is mainly due to the lack of widespread rainfall this afternoon (Friday) and the delay in timing of the cold front to Saturday night. We still expect sunshine Sunday but rain returns Monday, peaking on Tuesday afternoon, with spotty showers likely Wednesday and Thursday. The one silver lining to all of this rain will be temps as they soar to the upper 60's this weekend, leveling out to the low - mid 60's early next week. Temps Saturday will push int

Rain, Rain and more Rain

Good afternoon folks! It's Wednesday afternoon and we are focusing on the Thursday through Tuesday time frame for this discussion and it looks wet, not just passing showers wet, but the kind of prolonged rain to where you might pay for it to end. Luckily there will be a break in the action on Sunday that should alleviate major flooding issues, but smaller creeks and streams will certainly jump. We are tracking an upper level trough that will inch eastward and in combination with an approaching front, bring us scattered showers Friday followed by widespread and heavy rainfall Saturday. The front clears out Saturday night and sunny skies return Sunday but another front combined with a favorabl

High Elevation Snow Tuesday Morning

Good afternoon folks! The snow that fell yesterday afternoon and night surprised a few of us across SW NC, as NW flow snow bands setup shop and didn't want to die off like they normally do during a NW flow snow event. This left the Cowee Mountains and Macon/Jackson line down toward Highlands with a steady round of snow, with one report of 4" just below Cullowhee Mtn, while others reported 1 - 2" under the same snow band. See the below map for this particular band of snow that is showing up on the visible satellite imagery this morning. Image Source: College of Dupage, NEXLAB Satellite and Radar Now for the forecast. We'll enjoy sunshine the rest of today (Sunday) and fair weather will roll i

Rain & Snow Saturday; Sunny Sunday

Good afternoon folks! Showers will continue through the overnight hours and carry over into Saturday morning, with a transition from rain to snow based on elevation throughout the day Saturday. Snow accumulations will be confined to the usual NW flow locations, however a dusting is not out of the question for the valleys (nothing expected south and east of Cullowhee). Sunshine moves in Sunday and will continue into Monday with temps a few degrees above normal, followed by another round of showers Tuesday afternoon. This second round of precip will be short lived as a front crosses the region, setting up another stretch of dry weather Wednesday into late next week. Saturday will not be the be

A Soaker Thursday into Saturday

Good afternoon folks and Happy New Year! We have a soaking rain event heading our way with most of SW NC picking up 2", while a handful of spots along the N GA and SC state lines make a run at 3". All of this occurs Thursday afternoon into early Saturday morning and on the backside of the system, we'll enjoy some high elevation snow for the TN line Saturday night. Sunshine returns Sunday and sticks around for Monday, followed by another precip event Tuesday into Wednesday. This second event has the possibility for snow across the higher elevations, but don't get too excited as we wont know for sure till Friday or Saturday. Temps all the while warm Thursday into Friday, cooling down 10 - 12 d
