Fast Moving Front = Rain Free Trick or Treat

Good morning folks! For the second time this week I apologize for not getting out the discussion in time, but we encountered yet another setback and although all is well, I sure hope we can get back to normalcy soon. Everyone is eyeing the fast moving front and for us we are fortunate to be in a location where the front will be off to our east during prime Trick or Treat hours. For those who are planning to stay out late, you'll trade the lack of rain with plummeting temps and increasing winds, so dress warmly and don't be fooled by the lack of rain. On the back-end of the frontal passage we expect light snow showers for the TN line and nearby ridgelines, marking the 1st snowfall of the seas

Heavy Rain on Halloween Night

Good morning folks! I apologize for not posting anything yesterday. We had a family emergency and all is well, but i simply couldn't find the time to post a discussion as planned. In some way this was a good thing because the models have finally come together on how the upcoming rain event will play out across the region. Today (Monday) will pleasant with a slow increase in clouds this afternoon, more of the cumulus variety and by Tuesday we'll notice high clouds building before midday. Isolated light showers are possible Tuesday evening, first for the escarpment area and then for all of SW NC as southerly flow ramps up across the Carolinas. Wednesday will feature periods of moderate to heav

Soggy this Weekend; A Wet Halloween?

Good afternoon folks! We sure are enjoying this gorgeous weather today and if you haven't been up to the higher elevations, be sure to do so soon as the colors are peaking and the weather beginning Saturday will not be ideal for a Parkway drive. We expect Friday to be cloudy with a light shower or two, while Saturday and Sunday feature region wide showers that should carry over into Monday. Spotty shower chances will start the work and school week and ramp up to widespread coverage sometime Wednesday or Thursday, with much colder temps moving into the area late next week. The areas that will pick up the most rainfall will be along the N GA and SC state lines, with locations such as Highlands

Upper 20's Possible Thursday Morning

Good afternoon folks! The rain is behind us and winds are steady out of the NW around 10 - 20mph as we type this discussion (Tuesday afternoon). We picked up anywhere from a quarter of an inch to an inch across most of the region, with the highest amount out of Lake Toxaway (shocker) at 1.22". We'll enjoy two days of sunshine Wednesday and Thursday, followed by increasing clouds Friday and eventually showers will move into the region this weekend. The models still don't have a good handle as to when scattered or widespread showers will develop, so for now we are going with scattered showers late Saturday, most of the day Sunday and possibly extending into early next week. An upper level trou

Another Soaker arrives late Monday Night

Good afternoon folks! The interior portions of SW NC and areas closest to the TN line picked up much more rain than anticipated with region wide totals around 1.5 - 2.5"; areas along the escarpment picked up forecasted amounts of 1.5" plus. We expect another soaking rain event to occur late Monday into Tuesday, clearing out quickly to allow sunshine on Wednesday and Thursday. The models point to a late week rain event but are not in complete agreement regarding the exact timing and rainfall amounts, but they do agree that late this week, sometime around Friday, there will be another region wide rain event that should last well into next weekend. Temps this week will be fairly normal for late

Widespread Showers Saturday

Good afternoon folks! The first rime ice of the season occurred this morning across the highest elevations as temps dipped into the low 20's, alongside NW gust around 40 - 55mph. Down below in the valleys we woke up to frost as temps settled into the low 30's and tonight we expect much of the same, however this go around widespread frost is a sure bet. Friday keeps sunny skies overhead and temps moderate some, however clouds move in late and showers arrive sometime Saturday morning. We expect showers to continue throughout the day on Saturday with the bulk of the action along the SC state line, while the TN line picks up roughly half of the amount found along the escarpment. We'll salvage th

A Dip into the 30's; Warmer this Weekend

Good morning folks! Now that we are less than 24 hours out from the front arriving, it seems the highest rainfall totals we can hope for will be around a half inch, with a more realistic quarter inch across most of SW NC. The bulk of the rain will fall Tuesday night into Wednesday morning and as the front crosses the region Wednesday, we'll notice a change as winds pick up out of the NW and temps dip to below normal levels. Thursday will be sunny but don't let that fool you as it will be chilly with steady NW winds and temps roughly 6 - 8 degrees below normal, followed by widespread frost Thursday night. We'll even see a handful of high elevation stations above 5500' dip below freezing both

Showers Late Tuesday; Frost Thursday???

Good afternoon folks! Clouds will clear tonight and after some morning fog, we'll enjoy a sunny start to the work and school week, with slightly above average temps Monday afternoon. Clouds fill back in Tuesday and showers develop late Tuesday, peaking overnight into Wednesday and clearing out by Wednesday night. There is a decent chance for frost Wednesday night and Thursday will be sunny, but chilly as temps only hit the low 60's in the valley alongside NW winds throughout the day. We'll gradually warm back to normal and then slightly above normal levels Friday into next weekend. Monday is likely to start the day with dense fog, taking till the mid morning hours to burn off, but temps will

Spotty Showers this Weekend

Good afternoon folks! We'll put the warmer temps behind us starting Saturday as a front crosses the region and stalls just to our southeast, setting up mostly cloudy skies and light rain chances across SW NC. We don't expect much in the way of rainfall, but even a handful of light showers is better than the ongoing drought, which continues to expand and deepen with each passing week. There still remains a decent chance for widespread rain early next week, although the timeline has shifted to late Tuesday into Wednesday afternoon. We'll experience a day of sunshine on Monday ahead of the incoming rain Tuesday, with clearing skies taking place late Wednesday night and slightly below normal tem

Comfortable Conditions through Sunday

Good morning folks! Over the past 24 hours a quarter up to an inch of rain fell across a good portion of the region, however not all of us picked up rain. The highest amounts were located along the escarpment or nearby, while the driest spots were located along the TN line, all of this due to the easterly flow setup the past few days. This weak cold air damming setup will break down today (Wednesday) and we'll see a gradual transition to sunny skies by Thursday, with sunshine spilling over into Friday. A front is expected to cross the region Saturday, producing some showers and the models hint at it stalling just to our southeast, which may be prove to be helpful early next week. Sometime ar

Spotty Showers Late Monday & Tuesday

Good morning folks! Although the Cats lost a close game, at least we were able to enjoy a pleasant fall weekend with the cooler weather and colors beginning to turn across the highest ridgelines. The color forecast this year points to a short lived season due to the extended late season heat wave and ongoing drought. With this in mind it looks like things will quickly peak late this week and the following week for the highest elevations, while the valleys transition during the middle of the month. Back to the weather. We'll experience a few passing showers today (Sunday) but the meat of the rain event arrives late Monday as a front crosses the region, followed by another short round of showe

Fall Weather begins Saturday

Good afternoon folks! As of Wednesday afternoon we are once again roasting across the region with temps pushing anywhere from 14 - 18 degrees above normal for early October and this heat lingers into Thursday, cooling down slightly on Friday. The real and highly anticipated cooldown begins Saturday and normal temps (even slightly below normal at times) will play out the rest of the weekend and throughout next week. Although nothing is certain, this does look like our last gasp of heat for the season, with no more mid - upper 80's expected till next spring/summer. The high pressure overhead currently will shift east Friday as an upper level shortwave pushes across the Northeast, setting the s
