Cooler Temps arrive Friday

Good afternoon folks! The past few days have not been bone dry but they haven't been a soaker either, with storm coverage hit and miss across the region, resulting in some spots exceeding 2", while others were lucky to pick up a tenth of an inch. Looking ahead scattered showers are likely again Monday and Tuesday as a backdoor front migrates south, coupled with a slight uptick in NE flow across the region. We'll dry out again Wednesday under sunny skies and Thursday features a passing cold front but not like the last few fronts, instead one that will actually bring us a change in temps! Nothing is set in stone yet, but as of late Sunday the models point to a few passing showers Friday with t

Hope is Around the Corner

Good afternoon folks! The above average temps and mostly dry setup will continue Thursday into the middle of next week, but the models provide some hope that a pattern change is around the corner. A possible upper level trough may swing through or nearby the region late next week, disrupting the upper level ridge over the Southeast, bringing an end to the above average temps. This is not set in stone but fingers crossed the models continue to trend in this direction. For the near and mid term time-frame we expect a weak and slightly moisture starved front to cross the region Thursday, bringing with it isolated shower and thunderstorm chances. This rain opportunity is mainly focused along the

I'd Pay for Rain at this Point

Good morning folks! I apologize for not posting yesterday afternoon, no excuse, just let the day get away from me with chores and chasing down the little one. I'm afraid there is not much to report in regards to rain chances or in a more general sense, a pattern change. An upper level ridge will continue to dominate the eastern half of the country, with two weak fronts crossing the region this evening and Thursday. Both fronts look moisture starved, with the best chance for rain along the TN line and perhaps the Great Balsams, but even these locations shouldn't expect much more than a light passing shower. Temps will remain above average as they hold to the low 80's today through Wednesday,

Low 80's Hold Firm; Dry and Sunny

Good afternoon folks! We'll continue to deal with a dry setup Friday into the middle to latter part of next week and for those wishing for cooler temps, it looks like we'll continue to wait. The Climate Prediction Center released their 8 - 14 day outlook and our region sits firmly in the above average zone. Keep in mind "above average" does not translate to summer like temps but instead 4 - 6 degrees above what we expect for this time of the year. For Cullowhee, the average temps for late September are in the upper 70's for the high and low 50's for the low. With this in mind we expect temps to return to the low 80's this weekend and hold to this level all of next week, likely extending into

Normal Temps Wednesday - Friday

Good afternoon folks! Sunshine is dominating the landscaping as we start the work and school week, with no clouds overhead as of this afternoon (Monday). We'll notice an uptick in clouds throughout the day Tuesday, culminating in scattered showers late Tuesday night that should carry over into Wednesday afternoon. This is due to a weak backdoor front trying to move southward late tomorrow, followed by a cold front sliding across the region Wednesday, all of which won't amount to anything more than a handful of showers and a few thunderstorms. Dry weather settles back in Thursday and looks to continue through the weekend and into early next week. Temps will finally cool down beginning Wednesd

Change is Afoot; Rain Chances Increase

Good afternoon folks! We are watching a slow and steady pattern change begin to unfold this afternoon (Thursday) as enough moisture creeps into the region to nix the full sunshine setup we have endured/enjoyed as of late. Friday will be more the noticeable day of change as a backdoor cold front moves into the region from the north, while a cold front tries to make headway into the area from the NW. It doesn't seem the cold front will make much headway as the backdoor front wins out, stalling across the region and becoming the mechanism for shower development this weekend. At the same time an area of low pressure is developing in the eastern Gulf of Mexico that is likely to move northward ove

Above Average Temps into Friday

Good morning folks! After a hot and sunny weekend we expect a slight uptick in moisture levels as we move through the work and school week, culminating in isolated to possibly scattered shower chances beginning Wednesday, peaking sometime this weekend. An abnormal ridge of high pressure, much like we are used to during the summer months, is currently setup across the Southeast and will remain the driving force for our weather this week and weekend. This will translate into temps roughly 4 - 6 degrees above average and with moisture levels on the rise, comfort levels will drop as heat indicies push into the mid - upper 80's. Typically for early - mid September the lower elevation max daily te

Sunny, Warm, and Boring

Good afternoon folks! Hurricane Dorian continues to impact the eastern coastline, with no impact for our part of the state, except for an uptick in NW winds Friday. We'll continue to deal with or enjoy (depends on your perspective) mostly sunny skies Friday through Sunday and then a noticeable uptick in moisture levels arrives early next week, allowing for isolated thunderstorms to pop up each afternoon. For those hoping for cooler weather, you'll have to wait a bit longer as warmer than average temps hold strong all the way into late next week. Temps will not be outrageously hot as they sit roughly 3 - 5 degrees above normal, but with it being September we were hoping for a day or two with

Fair Weather Tuesday through Friday

Good morning folks! This past weekend has been humbling as we enjoyed sunny and warmer temps, while those in the Bahamas continue to deal with a record breaking Hurricane Dorian as it developed into a category 5 monster, currently stalled over the Bahamas as of Monday morning. SW NC will not be impacted by the tropical system as it eventually migrates up the eastern seaboard, hugging the coast at times, providing our region with sunny skies and slightly warmer than average temps. A weak front will swing through late Wednesday evening and offer up a few showers, while high clouds on Thursday make up the rest of the action this week. Generally temps will climb to the low - mid 80's each aftern
