A Sunny Labor Day Weekend

Good afternoon folks! We sure are enjoying these cooler mornings but more so the drier air and even with temps pushing into the low - mid 80's each afternoon, it doesn't feel as hot with the lower dewpoints. We'll continue to enjoy gorgeous, albeit warm weather through at least Wednesday and past that point in time the level of uncertainty increases a good bit. Hurricane Dorian (currently a Cat 3 as of 2:30p Friday) is churning toward the FL coast and where it goes from there looks to be along the eastern seaboard, which if this does occur will continue to provide our region with dry weather. Since our focus is SW NC and not the tropics, we'll stop there and wait till Monday to discuss poten

Near Perfect Weather Thur - Sat

Good afternoon folks! Cloud cover is beginning to wane a bit as we type this discussion and shower coverage has scaled back to isolated, which should last through the night and into Wednesday. We'll enjoy a bit more sunshine tomorrow morning than what we experienced today and with a front moving in from the west, we expect a round of scattered showers after midday. Clouds and moisture levels quickly dry out Wednesday night, setting up a gorgeous stretch of days with sunny skies overhead and temps climbing to normal levels. Fair weather will hold firm from Thursday into Saturday, which will allow for a hassle free tailgate and football game at Western, followed by clouds and moisture levels s

Cool and Wet through Tuesday

Good afternoon folks! The cold air damming event took till this morning (Sunday) to fully establish itself, hence why we saw more sunshine and warmer temps than was forecasted for Saturday, but we sure are enjoying the cooler temps this afternoon. Shower chances remain isolated tonight and increase to scattered coverage Monday afternoon, with not much in the way of heavy downpours expected, just light - moderate showers. Spotty showers continue into Tuesday and we'll enjoy temps a handful of degrees below normal Monday and Tuesday, with an increase in sunshine Wednesday, just enough to bring us back to normal. A cold front swings through late Wednesday afternoon, firing off scattered thunder

Below Normal Temps into Monday

Good afternoon folks! Scattered showers and thunderstorms dot the landscape today (Friday afternoon) and we expect an increase in coverage this evening, with showers scaling back to isolated coverage late tonight. The front moving into the region will work with a high pressure in Maine to establish cold air damming for the Carolinas, although our part of the state will only see minor effects from the setup, which is typically the case; those pesky Great Balsams and escarpment block all the fun. Regardless, we'll experience a wet weekend with temps below normal as they only reach the mid 70's Sunday and Monday, slowly moderating back to the low 80's by Tuesday/Wednesday of next week. For late

Rain Chances Increase; Temps Decrease

Good afternoon folks! This muggy setup is not ideal but there is light at the end of the tunnel, with a cool down expected beginning this weekend, lasting till the middle of next week. Granted, normal temps for this time of the year is much better off than our neighbors in the Piedmont and we'll certainly be ok with temps in the low - mid 80's, but we can't wait for temps hitting the mid - upper 70's this weekend! Don't get too excited just yet as we trade sunshine for showers starting Thursday, peaking this weekend with a slight decrease in shower coverage and intensities beginning Tuesday of next week. For those with outdoor plans this weekend, be sure to have a backup plan or perhaps dres

Hot and Muggy through Wednesday

Good afternoon folks! With most of Sunday already behind us we'll focus on the Monday through Thursday timeframe. The upper level atmosphere doesn't change too much Monday through Wednesday, however on Thursday a cold front will move into the area from the NW and take till roughly Saturday to move SE of our region. This should set the stage for closer to normal temps and increasing shower chances after Wednesday and although we don't expect a heavy rain event, scattered thunderstorms each day should produce enough rain to provide some relief from the somewhat dry setup we have had as of late. Temps Monday and Tuesday will continue to soar into the low - mid 70's along the ridgelines, while t

A Slow Uptick in Moisture Levels

Good afternoon folks! The forecast begins on Friday and we'll let the details fizzle out by Wednesday of next week, but for the most part we expect a slow and steady uptick in moisture levels beginning Sunday, peaking sometime late next week. The models still do not have a good handle on where the low pressure out of the gulf south will end up, however one thing is for certain and that is available moisture levels will be high enough for scattered showers and thunderstorms Sunday through Wednesday. The good news is for those moving back and to WCU tomorrow and this weekend, as the weather should be dry and not to chaotic to allow for a somewhat stress free move in; if there even such a thing

Peak Heat Wednesday; Sunny Thur/Fri

Good afternoon folks! A line of storms are trying to work their way across the region this afternoon (Tuesday) and we'll experience another round this evening, with showers lingering into the morning hours on Wednesday. All of this is due to a cold front slowly pushing its way southeast across the mountains, aiming for the coast where it should stall and setup this weekend's shower chances. Wednesday will feature heat indices once again making a run for the low - mid 90's as moisture associated with the frontal passage is slow to clear the area, however a drier setup moves in Thursday and Friday. Mostly sunny skies should hold through the weekend, with a normal summertime setup of pop up sho

Showers Return Tuesday into Wednesday

Good afternoon folks! We'll take a look at Sunday into Thursday as the models begin to diverge beyond that point in time. There is a fairly decent consensus that we'll experience building heat over the next few days, with showers returning late Tuesday. Scattered thunderstorms will continue into Wednesday as the front slowly works its way southeast, stalling across the Piedmont and Coastal Plain Thursday. Temps will return to near normal levels later in the week, but first we'll experience highs in the upper 80's, possibly touching 90°F in a few spots. Sunday will be the driest day over the next five days and mostly sunny skies will push temps into the low - mid 70's along the ridgelines and

Showers Wednesday; Sunny Saturday & Sunday

Good afternoon folks! An upper level disturbance will swing through Wednesday early afternoon, creating enough instability to develop scattered showers and thunderstorms, with shower activity fizzling out later that evening. Drier air moves in temporarily on Thursday to allow for sunny skies, while moisture slowly works its way back into the area Friday, but only enough to fire off a few thunderstorms along the ridgelines. The weekend for the most part will be mostly sunny, however it is still August and an isolated thunderstorm or two is not out of the question. Temps all the while will be average for this time of the year, with the lower elevations sitting in the mid 80's, while the ridgel

Slightly Drier Tuesday and Beyond

Good morning folks! We'll wrap up the weekend today with another active afternoon of scattered showers and thunderstorms and this setup will carry over into Monday, however drier air should infiltrate a bit Tuesday. As the week progresses we'll watch the upper level trough currently overhead shift east and the upper level ridge off to our west, flatten and slide east to sit atop the Southeast, allowing drier air to slide into the area. Although this dry air will temper shower and thunderstorm development, we don't expect another cool-down like we experienced at the end of July; sorry fall weather lovers. Overall, the week ahead looks fairly typical for August with pop up showers each afterno

Scattered Showers this Weekend

Good afternoon folks! Not much excitement over the next 5 - 7 days as an upper level trough sits atop the Southeast, while a Bermuda High spins moisture into the area from the south and southeast. This will translate into normal shower and thunderstorm activity across the region, with coverage peaking this weekend and slowly scaling back from scattered to isolated by the middle of next week. Temps will continue to push into the upper 60's along the ridgelines to the low 80's across the valleys Saturday into the middle of next week; normal highs are in the mid 80's for early - mid August across the lower elevations. All in all, we expect a normal summertime setup as we continue our march into
