The Heat Wave has Ended

Good afternoon folks! Temps are finally at normal levels for late May/early June as they hit the low 80's this afternoon. We'll continue to enjoy temps in the upper 50's - low 60's along the ridgelines and low 80's throughout the valleys as we enter the weekend, with a slight cool down to the mid - upper 70's Monday and Tuesday. Isolated thunderstorm and shower chances hang around each day and our best chance for scattered showers will be late Sunday afternoon. We don't expect much rain over the next few days, but what does fall will certainly help stave off drought conditions that our neighbors in the Update and N GA are experiencing ("abnormally dry" conditions; drought monitor website). Isolated Thunderstorms Thursday!

Good afternoon folks! It's been a long time since I was excited to talk about isolated shower chances but after this stretch of record breaking heat and no rain, I'll take whatever we can get. The record heat will continue into Wednesday and Thursday, cooling down roughly 5 degrees by Friday and into the weekend. Isolated (possibly scattered) thunderstorms will develop on Thursday as a cold front approaches the region and isolated shower chances continue into Friday and Saturday, ramping up to scattered chances on Sunday. Temps Friday through Sunday will still be above normal but noticeably cooler, especially in the shade. One other notable mention will be the dewpoints, which will be extrem

The Heat Wave Continues

Good afternoon folks! Not much to talk about in this discussion as sunny skies and near to record breaking heat persist across the Southeast. Although we may be roasting in the valleys with temps in the upper 80's - low 90's, remember it could be worse as our neighbors across the Piedmont flirt with the 100°F mark! Isolated showers are possible each afternoon, but we'll emphasis the word possible as maybe one or two could develop and it's more than likely they develop along ridgelines, not providing any relief for the populated areas. Late next week a cold front may bring us some rain but since we are talking next Friday/Saturday time frame, we'll only mention it at this point in time. Temp

Record Temps this Weekend

Good afternoon folks! Temps are pushing into the upper 80's this afternoon as we sit under sunny skies and we expect this pattern to continue for Wednesday, with a slight chance for isolated showers on Thursday. Mostly sunny skies will dominate the Memorial Day weekend and we expect record level daily highs beginning Friday, peaking on Sunday and Memorial Day (Monday). Past the small chance for a pop up shower or thunderstorm on Thursday, the dry pattern is expected to continue as upper level ridging rebuilds across the region late in the weekend, allowing the heat and sunshine to linger into next week. Temps are expected to reach the upper 80's Wednesday and Thursday for the valleys, althou

Passing Showers Late Sunday/Monday

Good morning folks! We'll be dealing with temps roughly 7 - 10 degrees above normal today through the end of next week, but at least isolated to scattered shower chances will be around today through Monday. Late Sunday into Monday will be our best window for shower development and rainfall totals will be under a half inch, so although showers may provide us with some relief, it wont amount too much and nothing we can bank on. Dry weather really sets in Tuesday and we expect only sunny skies till the end of next week. This weekend will have some pleasant moments, more so during the morning and late evening hours as we deal with temps pushing into the upper 60's along the ridgelines, while the

Turning Up the Heat

Good afternoon folks! The forecast over the next 5 - 7 days will feature isolated thunderstorms each afternoon, with a chance for scattered to widespread showers early Monday and the main highlight will be the increasing temps as we climb to levels 8 - 10 degrees above normal. An upper level ridge will control most of the action across the Southeast over the next week, with a weak front swinging through Monday that will only provide us with showers and nothing in the way of relief from the summer like heat. Temps typically will be in the upper 70's this time of the year for the lower elevations and the forecasted temps for the middle to end of next week show temps in the mid - upper 80's! Pl

Back to Normal by Week's End

Good afternoon folks! We certainly have been enjoying this spring like weather yesterday and today and even the colder temps, with several ridgeline sites reporting sub freezing temps this morning. Mt Mitchell dipped down to 28°F with a low wind chill of 13°F! Starting Wednesday we'll begin our climb back to summer like conditions, with temps returning to the low 80's by the weekend, alongside enough moisture to fire up isolated thunderstorms each afternoon. We do not expect any widespread rain from Wednesday into the weekend, only pop up showers and thunderstorms late each afternoon. There will be a passing disturbance late Wednesday that will produce high clouds and isolated showers, but t

Sunshine and Temps in the 30's

Good afternoon folks! Today's shower coverage is slightly less than forecasted but rainfall totals are well on track with most everyone picking up 2 - 3" of rain since Friday. Several sites hit the 4" mark (Downtown Sylva and Cullowhee) and the extreme totals are out of the Andrews area, at 5.75" (Beaver Creek) and 5.84" (Valley River); as of 1:30pm Sunday. We'll pick up another half inch or so before coverage fizzles out around midnight and then clearing skies move in, setting up a sunny stretch of weather that will last from Monday into Friday, possibly even next weekend; if you need to cut, dry and bail then this is your week. Temps will be spring like Monday and Tuesday, returning to nor

Commencement Weekend Washout

Good morning folks! First off, I want to say congratulations to the the graduating students this weekend and welcome you all into the alumni fold! Unfortunately, this weekend will not be very welcoming for those visiting Cullowhee to see their friends and family graduate, but for those who have lived here for four plus years, this weather will not be much of a surprise. We expect upwards of 2 - 3" of rain across the region, starting today and ending late Sunday afternoon/evening, with the bulk of the rain falling Saturday afternoon and Saturday night. The only silver lining to this downer of a forecast is that temps will be slightly below normal starting Saturday, although the excessive humi

Soggy Weekend; Dry and Cooler Monday

Good afternoon folks! A few thunderstorms are developing along the ridgelines this afternoon as expected, however our previous forecast for increasing shower coverage on Thursday will likely not play out as planned. The models hint at a slight reduction in coverage compared to today, so we are going with another round of isolated thunderstorms for Thursday afternoon, instead of the previously forecasted scattered thunderstorms. The front is still expected to swing through early in the day Friday, with showers dotting the landscape till the late morning hours and picking back up again Friday evening. Showers will continue overnight into Saturday and as the front stalls across the region, deep

Another Late Week Rain Event

Good afternoon folks! The airmass in place right now features slightly drier than normal moisture levels, however over the next few days this will change as the high pressure to our north slides east, allowing southerly flow to ramp up by the middle of the week. This will transition our area away from mostly sunny skies to pop up showers and thunderstorms, eventually culminating in a region wide frontal passage on Friday that will deliver widespread showers to the mountains. This weekend, although not set in stone, should be muggy as scattered shower chances remain alive and temps will cool down somewhat by the passing front. Tuesday brings us another sunny day across the mountains, with a f

Dry-ish Weather Returns Monday

Good afternoon folks! We are posting this discussion as a band of strong thunderstorms move through the region, but a lull should occur before sunset. A second round moves through tonight as a front migrates northeast, followed by another round of scattered showers/thunderstorms Sunday afternoon. Dry air should begin to undercut the lingering instability late Sunday, setting up more sun than clouds for Monday and Tuesday. Although early next week features sunshine, the likelihood thunderstorms pop up each afternoon remain high, especially for locations along and near the SC state line. Southerly flow will really ramp up by mid week, setting the table for another round of strong thunderstorms

Scattered Thunderstorms Saturday

Good afternoon folks! We are wrapping up another warm afternoon across the region, with moisture continuing to build out of the south and east. A high pressure system off the coast is spinning excess moisture our way and the overall pattern across the region is keeping above average temps alive, setting up summer like conditions Friday through Sunday, with a minor cool down expected by early next week; still above normal levels. Pop up showers and thunderstorms make up the action Friday, while a mass of showers and thunderstorms propagate northeastward Saturday, crossing our region later in the day. Coverage should wind down early Sunday and once a weak front crosses the area, we expect dry
