Pop Up Showers become the Norm

Good afternoon folks! Temps are holding to the upper 80's this afternoon in the deeper valleys, while the ridgelines sit in the mid 60's. Some clouds move in tonight but clear out tomorrow and then moisture begins to creep into the area starting Thursday, building up enough on Friday to allow scattered showers to develop. Thunderstorms are possible Friday and Saturday, with scattered pop up showers likely (similar to a summertime setup) late Friday into Sunday. We are not expecting a washout as expected rainfall totals only amount to a half inch region wide for all three days; up to an inch for those who experience a passing thunderstorm. Dry weather returns early next week, possibly as soon

Hottest Week of the Season

Good afternoon folks! Our weekend is coming to a close and we expect the work and school week to be a hot one, with temps pushing well into the mid 80's Tuesday and Wednesday, possibly making a run at the upper 80's for Franklin, Bryson City and Sylva. A series of fronts to our north late in the week will stir up some shower activity late Thursday and Friday, with a possible frontal passage Friday night into Saturday. If you have outdoor plans Thursday evening and Friday afternoon it looks like a good bet scattered showers will develop, but we do not expect a washout at this time. Temps cool back to near normal late in the week due to cloudy skies and spotty showers, followed by slightly bel

Fair Weather through Tuesday

Good afternoon folks! It's a windy day across the region with gust up to 45 - 50mph along the ridgelines and clouds will continue to push to the east, followed by sunny skies overhead before sunset. We picked up a tenth - quarter inch of rain for most of the region and the highest total is out of Unaka at 0.44". Sunshine dominates the day tomorrow and a few clouds develop Sunday with a very isolated chance for showers. Sunshine carries over into Monday and Tuesday, with temps warming to the low 80's and perhaps the mid 80's by the middle part of next week. Enough moisture and instability moves into the region by Tuesday or Wednesday to allow pop up thunderstorms, similar to what we typically

Showers Thur/Fri; Sunshine this Weekend

Good afternoon folks! The models are continuing to show the two pieces of energy phasing late and perhaps not at all and this translates into a light rain event for the region Thursday late afternoon into Friday afternoon. If you have outdoor plans and can ride out a passing shower or two under a tent or shelter, then keep your plans as we do not expect a washout with rainfall totals under a half inch over the 48 hour period. After the front exits Friday, dry air and clearing skies move in Friday night, setting up a pleasant mid spring weekend for the area with sunshine overhead and temps warming to slightly above average levels. The models show another frontal passage occurring late Sunday

Warmer than Average; Rain Thur - Fri

Good morning folks! We did not post yesterday and for that I apologize as our family was held up with Easter activities and holiday traffic coming back home. Regardless, the weather this past weekend from Thursday into Saturday was pretty extreme for this time of the year. Asheville set their third wettest day on record at 5.29", which is astounding as their records go back to 1869! While Asheville penciled in a record rainfall, areas near downtown and elsewhere along the escarpment dealt with flooding as over 5 - 7" of rain fell, with two stations surpassing the 7" mark; Pisgah Forest at 7.09" and Clear Creek at Townsend at 7.01"! These amounts are usually tied to a tropical cyclone but for

Easter Weekend Snowfall

Good afternoon folks! It has been an impressive 36 hours with everyone across SW NC picking up over 2" of rain. Numerous sites surpassed the 3 - 4" mark and a handful eclipsed the 5" threshold, with only one making it as far as 6.93" and that would be Pisgah Forest. All of the 5 - 6" amounts were found along the escarpment, moving up into the French Broad Valley as southwesterly flow coupled with very strong thunderstorms setup shop this morning, taking till the mid afternoon hours to scale back to scattered coverage. We are not done with the rain and although we only called several inches of rain for this event, it looks like we could pick up another 0.5 - 1" this afternoon into Saturday ev

Widespread Rain Friday; Snow Saturday

Good afternoon folks! Temps remain above average today and will continue to remain above average Thursday, cooling down to slightly below normal on Friday and well below normal by Saturday. The cool down Friday into Saturday is brought on by a strong upper level trough and cold front, pushing heavy rain across the region early Friday with scattered to widespread showers extending into Saturday. As the system departs to the east, upper level cold air will push down to the surface and allow snow to fall along the ridgelines, with a rain/snow mix possible for most of the highway gaps (Soco, Balsam, Cowee, etc.) while the valleys remain warm enough for only cold rain to fall. For those who are p

Fair Conditions through Thursday

Good afternoon folks! We are certainly enjoying this cooler weather setup after such a warm start to the spring season, but for those who are not, you'll only have to endure another 12 - 18 hours as slightly above average temps return Tuesday. Sunshine is expected to be overhead the rest of today, Tuesday, Wednesday and perhaps even Thursday early morning, before southerly flow provides enough moisture to develop clouds across the area. A strong frontal passage will occur sometime Friday and with it bring widespread rain and strong to severe thunderstorms, with a second cool down slated for Saturday and Sunday. All in all, the week ahead looks quiet with heavy rain a good bet to end the work

Soggy Sunday; Slight Cool-down Monday

Good morning folks! Showers are slowly filling in across the region but we'll only deal with scattered light - moderate showers the rest of the day, with the heavier rain and thunderstorms moving across the region tomorrow. Sunday will be a soggy day with showers around for the most of the day but it looks as if the early afternoon hours will be when peak coverage occurs, followed by clearing skies overnight into Monday. Temps dip to slightly below normal levels Monday, only hitting the low - mid 60's in the valley, when they should be in the upper 60's - low 70's. Sunshine returns Monday as well, holding firm through Tuesday, giving way to clouds late Wednesday. The models point to a late f

Showers Friday; Heavy Rain Sunday

Good afternoon folks! Temps are once again above average today as the valleys sit in the mid 70's and although we'll cool down slightly (by a few degrees) Friday through Sunday, we'll also deal with a good bit of rain. Most of SW NC will pick up 2 - 3" of rain tomorrow into Sunday, with the bulk of that falling on Sunday. Sunshine returns Monday and will likely hold firm till Wednesday, although the models are pointing at another disturbance sweeping the Southeast around the middle of the week. Temps continue to remain above freezing and although its never a guarantee, with each passing day we are becoming more and more confident our freeze threat is over for the season. Temps tonight dip in

Next Round of Rain arrives Thursday Night

Good afternoon folks! Although clearing skies will continue this afternoon, we'll also experience a few pop up thunderstorms as the atmosphere destabilizes under blossoming sunshine. Clouds clear out tonight and sunshine reigns supreme Wednesday and Thursday, with clouds and showers returning late Thursday night ahead of the next frontal passage. It seems the front will push through Friday late morning and provide us with another round of rain, although it will be much less than this recent event, which turned out to be a general 1 - 2" of rain instead of the 2 - 3" we forecasted. Passing clouds and sunshine make up the day on Saturday, however a vigorous front and upper level disturbance ar

Heavy Rain Monday into Tuesday

Good afternoon folks! Passing clouds and a few showers along the TN line will round out the weekend, with an upper level low expected to cross the region late Monday, followed by a cold front Tuesday late morning. These two features will bring us scattered to widespread showers with numerous thunderstorms that will be capable of heavy downpours and hail. We are not expecting a severe weather event, but this being our first round of strong thunderstorms this spring, its simply worth noting that hail is a possibility. Showers exit Tuesday afternoon and sunshine returns Wednesday, lingering into part of Thursday but southwesterly flow ahead of the next frontal passage will return showers to the

Showers Sunday into Tuesday

Good afternoon folks! We picked up an inch of rain for areas closer to the N GA and SC state lines with the rest of SW NC closing in on a half inch of rain from our latest round of rain. Tonight into Saturday should be dry but showers return late Sunday, with an increase in coverage on Monday that will limit our time outside. Showers are expected to wind down Tuesday with another stretch of dry weather Wednesday into Friday of next week. Temps all the while will remain in the upper 60's - mid 70's for the valleys with overnight lows well above freezing for all of SW NC; no worry about frost for the next 7 nights. Temps tonight dip into the mid 40's across the higher elevations, while the val

Showers Late Thursday into Friday

Good afternoon folks! I hope everyone is enjoying these above normal temps as several valley sites sit in the low 70's at this time, which is warmer than expected, but if you're going to be wrong its better to have pleasant weather instead of gloomy weather. Clouds will be slow to fill in across the area tonight but we'll notice an uptick in humidity as southerly flow picks up ahead of the front that is expected to push through Thursday night. Showers move in late Thursday evening and take till the late morning - early afternoon hours to wind down, with all precip ending by the evening hours. The models now point to moisture lingering across the region into Saturday, which translates to a mi

Flurries Tuesday; Near 70°F Thursday

Good afternoon folks! We are not playing a April's fool joke today with the headline mentioning snow but there is nothing to worry about as our part of the area will only see passing snow showers at best, with flurries the most likely setup. We are talking about Tuesday morning and this will all push to the east rather quickly, with full sunshine overhead by sunset and then the warming trend begins with temps returning to normal by Thursday. Showers look to sweep the region Thursday night and they'll be light and quick moving with precip ending by late afternoon Friday. Sunshine returns for the weekend and we'll make a run at the upper 70's by Saturday or Sunday! Tonight temps settle into th
