A Minor Cool Down Sunday into Tuesday

Good morning folks! We'll enjoy a dry day today with showers sweeping the region late tonight, exiting early in the morning on Sunday, followed by sunshine overhead around midday. Sunshine lingers into Monday and for Tuesday it seems the low pressure system that would have brought us snow will only bring us high clouds and a very slight chance for a passing snow shower. This is the main reason we waited till today to take a deeper look at the possibility for snow as the majority of the models have moved the low pressure system further to the south as it tracks across the Florida panhandle and up the coast. This could trend northward, however at this point in time we are only going with token

Showers return Late Saturday Night

Good morning folks! I apologize for skipping our discussion yesterday and hopefully it did impact your afternoon too much. Looking ahead we expect sunshine to continue into Thursday and Friday, with some high levels clouds arriving Saturday and showers pushing through late Saturday night. Showers should push out of the region before midday Sunday and the models hint at a possible and I repeat, possible chance for snow in the higher elevations Monday night into Tuesday. This is too far out to mention any details and more so since it'll be April, these chances could evaporate just as quickly as they show up on the models. We will keep on eye on this and discuss more details sometime Saturday m

Showers and a Slight Cool Down

Good afternoon folks! We are enjoying another sunny spring day across the region as we wrap up the weekend, with showers expected to return as early as the pre dawn hours on Monday. We'll deal with two disturbances Monday into Tuesday that will be the catalyst for rain across the region. The first will be a passing front on Monday and the second an upper level shortwave swinging across the area Tuesday around midday, both of which will provide us with 1 - 2" of rain, although the higher end totals will be isolated. By Wednesday sunshine will return and linger into Friday, with the models hinting at another passing front for next weekend but we'll wait till at least Tuesday before putting any

Showers return Monday and Tuesday

Good afternoon folks! After some high elevation snow yesterday and last night, with an inch of snow reported at Mt. LeConte lodge and Cataloochee Ski Area, we are certainly enjoying this sunny weather. Strong winds will continue through the night and calm down Saturday morning, with a perfect setup for the weekend as sunshine and warmer temps hold strong through Sunday. Some clouds are likely closer to sunset on Sunday, with light showers developing later that night ahead of the next round of rain. It seems the models have a handle on the timing of the rain with scattered showers during the day Monday, becoming heavy shortly before or after sunset and taking most of the day Tuesday to wind d

Showers Thursday; Windy Friday

Good afternoon folks! The Spring Equinox occurs at 5:58pm this afternoon, which means we will experience an equal amount of day and night, with the days growing longer as we continue our march through spring toward the Summer Equinox on June 21st. Sunshine today gives way to increasing clouds tonight, followed by scattered light showers tomorrow that should wind down by the late evening hours. Sunshine returns Friday but NW flow lingers and so does strong and breezy conditions which will wind down later that night. Sunny conditions carry over into the weekend and Sunday in particular looks fairly warm, with temps approaching the 70°F mark! Past Sunday the models differ on how they handle an

A Boring but Pleasant Forecast

Good afternoon folks! The next handful of days will be quiet across the region, with the only action being scattered light showers on Thursday as a low passes to our south. For those wishing for snow or some form of wintry precip, it seems that is not possible this go around as the bulk of the precip remains to our south and temps moderate slowly through the week. Sunshine overhead today will continue into Tuesday and Wednesday, returning Friday after the short lived rain event. Temps slowly moderate as the week moves along and although they will be slightly below normal, it will be spring like outside with cold morning and warm afternoons. Temps tonight settle into the low 20's for the vall

Chilly and Sunny; Flurries Sunday Night

Good afternoon folks! We are enjoying mostly sunny skies this afternoon, even with temps below normal for this time of the year (normal high in Cullowhee for March 16 is 61°F). Fair weather will continue into next week, with a brief shot of ridgeline flurries Sunday night; nothing expected for the valleys. Sunshine on Monday carries into Wednesday, although partly cloudy skies are likely to develop late in the day Wednesday. This increase in cloud cover is associated with an incoming upper level low that is forecasted to arrive sometime Thursday. The models show the potential for an elevation dependent snow event Thursday, however we are not sold on this solution just yet and if it were to o

Sunshine and Cooler Temps this Weekend

Good afternoon folks! Winds are picking up this afternoon ahead of the approaching cold front, with showers expected to reach the mountains this evening. Shower coverage increases to widespread before before midnight and thunderstorms are possible overnight into Friday, with showers eventually winding down Friday afternoon. Sunshine sets up shop for the weekend and possibly into early next week, however the models bring another front through that may develop showers, although it does look moisture starved at this point in time. The next potential for rain will be Wednesday/Thursday of next week and a possible transition to snow may occur for the highest ridgelines, however take anything beyo

Showers Thursday & Friday

Good afternoon folks! Our forecast for Monday was a bust as we called for a mixed bag of sun and clouds and instead we experienced cloudy skies and passing light showers, although the temps were somewhat reasonable. Looking ahead we expect another round of high clouds Wednesday, becoming mostly cloudy before sunset, followed by light showers breaking out sometime after midnight. Shower coverage should remain scattered throughout the day on Thursday as deep moisture out of the southwest pushes over our high terrain, squeezing out light - moderate showers. A front will approach from the west on Thursday and cross our region early in the day Friday, sometime shortly before or after sunrise. Pre

Spring Like Weather this Week

Good afternoon folks! We hope everyone wasn't caught off guard with the time change this morning, but if you were the forecast will make up for it as we expect spring like conditions this week. Temps will be near normal for the most part but windy conditions coupled with a drier airmass may bring on a slight chill during the early morning and late evening hours each day. We'll enjoy sunshine Monday through Wednesday, however high clouds Monday and late day clouds Wednesday will ensure Tuesday is the sunniest day of the week. Showers are expected to return sometime around sunrise Thursday, peaking in coverage and intensities Friday and winding down sometime early Saturday. Since we are still

We're dealing with (or enjoying depending upon your preference) scattered light to moderate showers today, after initially picking up some snow during the early - mid morning hours above 5000'. Precip will continue throughout the night and wind down by the early morning hours Saturday, however drizzle is possible at any point throughout the day, with widespread showers returning closer to sunset. Heavy rain swings through the region Sunday morning, with clearing skies past midday that may move fast enough to allow sunshine to return before sunset. Monday and Tuesday look mostly sunny, while Wednesday features increasing clouds ahead of the next rainmaker which is slated

Another Soggy Weekend Lies Ahead

Good afternoon folks! Although temps are below normal and downright frigid at times, we are certainly enjoying the sunshine. This fair weather will not last long as the high pressure keeping sunny skies overhead slides east Thursday, with clouds filling in Thursday night. A round of precip moves in Friday morning with a possible hour or two of high elevation snow and wintry mix for the valleys, before kicking over to a cold rain the rest of the day. Showers wind down late Friday night and pick back up again Saturday afternoon, with heavy, widespread rain swinging through around sunrise Sunday. Precip winds down before sunset and early next week should be pleasant as we enjoy another handful

Single Digits Likely Tuesday Night

Good afternoon folks! After picking up another inch of rain this past weekend for the majority of SW NC (a handful of sites surpassed 1.25"), we are enjoying the sunshine today as best we can as below normal temps continue to remind us winter is not over. We'll deal with 10 - 20 degree below average temps through Wednesday, followed by a slow warming trend beginning Thursday, peaking this weekend to the low 60's across the valley floor. Although temps return to normal late this week, there will be a concession as we have to endure another round of rain, possibly heavy at times on Sunday. With this in mind, if you have outdoor chores to finish up, it looks like the driest days this week will

Colder Weather is Around the Corner

Good afternoon folks! Today's sunny skies were a pleasant treat after picking up some rain on Friday, however much more rain will fall on Sunday. Starting Monday we'll deal with below average temps in the 10 - 20 degree range and it may take until Thursday to reach near normal levels, with the only silver lining being that Monday through Thursday will feature sunny skies. The other silver lining is for skiers and boarders as this stretch of colder than normal weather will be ideal for the local ski resorts to make snow day and nigh, setting up a nice late season base to wind down the season later on this month. Clouds thicken tonight and light spotty showers develop closer to sunrise on Sund
