Soggy and Warm through Saturday

Good afternoon folks! I apologize for the delay in getting a discussion out, but things are back in order on the home front and moving forward the every other day posting pattern will continue; next post comes out Saturday. Isolated light showers and drizzle continue to dot the landscape today and will wind down early Friday morning, with a second round moving in Friday afternoon but this should also be light and nothing to worry about; keep those plans but grab a rain jacket. Saturday brings us a break in the pattern and we may even experience a few hours of sunshine but of course this won't last as heavy rain is slated to return late Saturday night and carry throughout the day Sunday. As t

Rain Chances Increase Wednesday

Good afternoon folks! We are enjoying this nice break from the rain, after picking up over 5 - 8 inches of rain since last Monday. In particular, Cullowhee Creek was the only one to hit the 8" mark at 8.03", while Hogback Mountain and Lake Toxaway broke the 7" mark at 7.72" and 7.33" respectively; the majority of SW NC surpassed the 5 - 6" thresholds. Granted, this is all from the FIMAN rain network and if you have higher totals or would like to pass along your observations, by all means let us know by emailing us at preston@localyokelweather.com. Looking ahead we will enjoy another round of sunshine Tuesday, with light rain moving in Wednesday and Wednesday night. A minor break in the actio

Dry Weather Returns!!!

Good afternoon folks! Although most of the rain missed us this morning with the bulk of it falling across the entire state of TN, we'll pick up more rain tonight as the front crosses the region. We don't expect a washout but we do expect heavy showers at times and most of the rain will be off to our east shortly after sunrise on Sunday. Sunshine will setup shop Sunday and linger through Tuesday, possibly Wednesday, and for late next week the models offer varying scenarios that lead to little confidence, but the pattern favors a round of showers sometime Thursday or Friday. Temps all the while will be somewhat normal as they hit the 50's each day next week, with overnight lows flirting with t

Sunshine at the End of the Tunnel

Good Morning Folks! For the most part SW NC picked up 1 - 1.5" of rain over the past 24 hours, ending Thursday morning at 9:30am, with two spots along the escarpment exceeding the 2" mark; Lake Toxaway at 2.21" and Rosman at 2.19". We'll pick up another 1 - 2" of rain today through Friday, with another round moving through Saturday night into Sunday morning and this second round will actually end the long stretch of gloomy and wet weather, setting up a gorgeous Monday to start next week. This much deserved sunny weather next week will not last long (can't catch a break) as yet another system is poised to swing through sometime Tuesday or Wednesday. Temps today through the weekend will remain

On and Off Rain through Sunday

Good Morning Folks! Showers are trying to push into the Southern Highlands Plateau as we type this discussion on Tuesday morning, however most of the region will remain dry till the early afternoon hours. Shower intensity ramps up tonight, winds down somewhat Wednesday and picks back up Wednesday night, with another lull on Thursday, only to ramp up once again Thursday night into Friday. The weekend ahead remains soggy as showers increase to widespread coverage Friday night, scaling back to scattered coverage Saturday and returning to widespread Sunday as yet another disturbance moves along in the dominant southwest flow across the Southeast region. It seems a front will sweep the Southeast

Soaking Rains Continue (Minus Monday)

Good Morning Folks! It's mid morning on Sunday and over the past 24 hours we have picked up roughly a tenth to a quarter of an inch for the majority of the region, with spotty showers still traversing the area from the southwest to northeast. Since Friday morning, we have picked up a half inch up to 1.5" for the bulk of the area, which is slightly less than we forecasted on Friday but the pattern is still playing out as expected. Spotty showers will continue throughout the day today and heavy rain swings through tonight, clearing out by early Monday morning, setting up a fairly nice reprieve to start the new work and school week. After some much needed drying out and sunshine Monday, rain mo

The Southwest Rain Train

Good Morning Folks! Step outside today and enjoy the dry weather as the next 5 – 7 days (perhaps even longer) will be wet to say the least, with upwards of 6 – 7” falling across the area. Of course, not all of this will fall at once, but we will have several rounds of rain that will drop two or three inches at a time, with numerous waves of rainfall that bring us a half inch up to an inch each go around. Temps all the while will be above freezing and at times the southwesterly flow will push temps to above average levels, with the warmer weather being our only silver lining for the next 5 – 7 days. Temps today hit the mid 40’s – upper 50’s depending upon elevation, under thickening cloud cov

Last Call for Sunshine; More Rain Friday

Good Afternoon Folks! It's late in the day on Wednesday as we write this discussion so we will focus on Thursday and beyond, which features one last round of sunshine and then a stretch of damp and cloudy days. Sunshine tomorrow coupled with southerly flow will push temps into the low 60's across the valley and sometime around midnight a round of light showers will sweep the region, winding down Friday morning. A second disturbance swings through Friday night, ending Saturday morning and there is a chance for sunshine Saturday afternoon, but its more likely high clouds remain overhead. A warm front pushes into the region Sunday afternoon, prompting more rain to fall and then we deal with a d

Heavy Rain Tuesday; Sunny Wednesday

Good Afternoon Folks! We're expecting scattered showers to develop later this evening and continue throughout the night with decent rainfall totals by sunrise. Shower coverage winds down closer to sunrise Tuesday but showers return later that morning with heavy rain sweeping the region during the early afternoon hours, followed by light showers that should linger into the evening hours. Colder air rushes in on the backside of the departing front late Tuesday night and allows any lingering moisture to kick over to snow for the TN line with light accumulations at best; nothing to write home about. Sunshine Wednesday will be offset by cooler temps, however Thursday looks gorgeous as temps rise

Showers Sunday; Heavy Rain Tuesday

Good Afternoon Folks! We hope you enjoyed the sunshine today as Sunday marks a three day stretch of spotty showers, culminating in a round of heavy rain and possible light snow on the tail end. Wednesday brings sunshine back to the region and this will extend into Thursday, however it ends there as yet another front is scheduled to cross the region sometime Friday. Temps all the while will be near normal allowing most of the precip to fall as rain, with the one exception being early Sunday morning when freezing rain, sleet or snow may fall. We don't expect anything to stick and warm temps move in fast enough Sunday late morning to kick all precip over to rain. If you're planning ahead and ne

Seasonal Temps Return this Weekend

Good Morning Folks! Gradual clearing this afternoon, coupled with a strong southwest flow into the area will push temps anywhere from 20 - 25 degrees above average, with temps in the valleys hitting the low - mid 70's! This will likely break the daily record for February 7th for almost all of our climate stations across the Carolinas, but cooler weather returns this weekend. Light showers traverse the mountains tonight and dry up tomorrow morning, with cooler temps rushing in behind the departing front on Friday. This sets up seasonal temps for Friday through the middle of next week, mainly due to a high pressure system settling into the area. Sometime late Sunday moisture overrides the cool

Showers Wednesday; Mid 70's Thursday

Good Afternoon Folks! Temps have hit the low 70's this afternoon in places like Sylva, Cullowhee and Waynesville and we expect temps to peak this week on Thursday, likely hitting the mid 70's! These temps are roughly 20 - 25 degrees above average for this time of the year and we'll return to normal sometime Friday, with seasonal temps lingering through the weekend. Scattered light showers break out Wednesday afternoon, peaking in coverage late Wednesday evening and winding down before sunrise Thursday. Another round of showers moves through Friday afternoon as a cold front sweeps the region, which will also usher in colder temps and cutoff the southwest flow which has been the main driver fo

Spring Like Weather this Week

Good Morning Folks! We continue to enjoy above average temps this weekend and looking at the week ahead, it seems warmer than normal temps remain across the area through at least Thursday. Shower chances will increase as a result of the increasing southerly flow, however we don't expect any heavy rain events or a prolonged periods of rain. Sunshine slowly increases today as we round out the weekend and clouds return tomorrow afternoon, with light and isolated showers peppering the region Monday night and Tuesday. Shower chances peak this week late Wednesday into Thursday and winds down throughout the day Thursday, with a slight pattern change arriving Friday into Saturday. Temps Monday reach

A Pleasant and Warm Weekend

Good Morning Folks! The cold snap is behind us and although we are starting the day in the teens and 20's, temps will push to near normal levels this afternoon under a mixed bag of sun and high clouds. Sunshine carries over into Saturday, however clouds fill in on Sunday with only isolated shower chances that will wane late Sunday night, but pick back up Monday afternoon into Tuesday. By the middle of next week a front will be at our door and will be slow. Combined with southwesterly flow out of the Gulf of Mexico, mostly cloudy skies and scattered showers are a good bet for the middle to end of next week. The silver lining will of course be the above average temps, however we'll trade the c
