Soaking Rains; Warming Temps

Good Afternoon Folks! Clouds have filled in across the region and isolated showers have begun to push into the area from the southwest. Light showers will continue to pepper the region through the night and morning hours on Friday, with coverage waning as we enter the late afternoon hours. Coverage picks back up late Saturday morning, becoming widespread by the afternoon hours and winding down once again sometime Sunday morning. A third round of rain will move through the region late Sunday night and Monday, with a series of additional systems bringing more rain to the region Tuesday and Wednesday. The only silver lining to the on and off shower activity is that temps will finally warm up, p

A Quick Shot of Rain and Snow

Good Morning Folks! We wrap up the weekend today with slowly lifting fog before midday, a few hours of sunshine and then a round of precip tonight into Monday morning. Temps will drop below freezing for the TN line above 5500' tomorrow morning and kick rain over to snow, with accumulations under an inch in the highest spots (not much to speak of). Sunshine moves in Tuesday and lingers into part of Friday with another round of precip crossing the region Friday into Saturday. Temps all the while will be below normal but not near record levels, with a silver lining that Cataloochee Ski Area will have roughly 2 - 3 days and nights to make snow this week. Temps max out to the upper 40's on the ri

Two Rounds of Rain then Cooler Temps

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! Not to be too cliche but we want to say how grateful we are for all of our fellow weather nerds across the region and to our readers that keep LYW going. The rest of the day features sunshine and Friday continues this dry pattern, with clouds developing closer to sunset and showers developing overnight into Saturday. Widespread showers move across the region Saturday, pushing out before sunset with possible breaks in the cloud cover. Sunday offers up a mixed bag of clouds and sun, with the second round of rain moving through overnight into Monday and with temps crashing on the back end, light snow is likely for the TN line before sunrise. The rest of next week lo

No Travels Issues for Thanksgiving

Good Afternoon Folks! It's Tuesday and the sun is shining for most of us with clear skies expected tonight, allowing temps to dip below freezing region wide. Sunshine sits overhead Wednesday and Thursday, however clouds return Friday with showers developing Friday night and lingering through most of the day Saturday. A break in the action occurs Sunday morning but another round of rain quickly fills in by the late afternoon hours, ending sometime Monday. We titled today's discussion assuming everyone is traveling somewhere nearby, but for those driving to the northwest portion of the state (Boone) down to the escarpment (Morganton), be sure to double check the forecast for Friday night as fr

A Relatively Quiet Holiday Week

Good Morning Folks! Sunshine is dominating the landscape this morning (Sunday) and will continue to do so for most of the day, however high clouds should push in as near sunset and continue to fill in throughout the night. Passing high clouds linger overhead Monday as a front approaches the region, with a narrow band of showers pushing through overnight into Tuesday. The front should exit quickly and allow sunshine to return by midday Tuesday, hanging around through the end of the week and allowing for a travel free holiday this Thanksgiving. A second front approaches from the north on Thursday but it looks to have minimal impact to the region. By the time Saturday rolls around the models po

Another Washout; Localized Wintry Precip

Good Morning Folks! I'm sure not many of us are enjoying these chilly and wet days we have been dealing with as of late and although I wish I could say we are out of the woods, a second round of heavy rain will move through this afternoon, winding down by Thursday morning for most of the region. Some lingering precip Thursday afternoon and evening will kick over to snow for the highest ridgelines closer to the TN line and then dry air moves in, setting up a sunny end of the school and work week, followed by a handful of sunny days that should carry through the weekend and into early next week. Temps all the while are expected to warm up a bit once we get past Thursday but nothing that will j

Several Inches of Rain; Freezing Drizzle Possible

Good Morning Folks! Showers are moving into the region as we type this discussion (8:30am Monday) and the next 48 hours will be soggy to say the least, with another round of showers sweeping the region Wednesday into Thursday. There is a small threat for freezing rain and/or drizzle early Thursday morning and we'll go into detail as to which areas across the SW NC mountains may be affected, however it seems to be more of a NW NC threat as opposed to a widespread mountain issue. Temps all the while will be below normal and sunny skies wont return till the weekend, so prepare for a soggy week with temps rather chilly at times. A low pressure system lifting north across the area today and tomor

Rain to Snow; A January-like Weekend

Good Afternoon Folks! Light spotty showers are beginning to pepper the region this afternoon and will continue to do so overnight into Friday, winding down by the mid - late afternoon for most of SW NC, however moisture lingers along the TN line overnight into Saturday. With temps crashing this weekend this will prompt rain to kick over to snow for the TN line early Saturday with a dusting at best. Saturday and Sunday offer up sunshine but NW flow will usher the coldest temps of the season thus far as we experience temps that are more common in January than mid November. Sunday morning in particular will be downright chilly as temps sit in the 20's for most of the mountains. Showers move bac

Showers Return Late Thursday; Sunny this Weekend

Good Morning Folks! With the bulk of the rain off to our east as of 8:30am, rainfall totals will not climb much higher and notable totals include Cullowhee, Newfound Gap and Hogback Mtn (Panthertown area), where at least 1.2" of rain fell. The highest total across SW NC is out of Hogback Mtn where 1.34" fell overnight and into the morning, with wind gust up to 40 - 60mph across the ridgelines throughout the region. Drier air moves in this afternoon, setting up clear skies before sunset and a sunny Wednesday, however another disturbance moves through late Thursday, with showers peaking in coverage Friday. This late week round of rain will clear out late Friday evening and allow sunshine to po

Several Rounds of Rain; Slightly Warmer

Good Morning Folks! We wrap up the weekend today under a sunny start, however clouds fill in as the day moves along and showers develop shortly after sunset, winding down for the most part tomorrow morning. Enough moisture will be present in the overall flow tomorrow to keep isolated showers and drizzle around for most of the day, with a second round of rain moving through late Monday night and for most of the day Tuesday, clearing out Tuesday evening. Wednesday is our weather pick of the week due to sunny skies and warmer temps setting up shop across the mountains, but as our discussion title suggest, we expect yet another round of rain to move in late Thursday, possibly clearing out just i

Widespread Showers then a Sunny Weekend

Good Afternoon Folks! A front is slowly moving east as it moves across the TN valley as of the early afternoon hours on Thursday. This band of showers will enter our region this afternoon, peaking in coverage and intensities overnight into Friday, with a lull in the action expected by sunrise Friday. This lull will be short lived as spotty light showers return to the region Friday afternoon due to a piece of upper level energy swinging through the upper level trough. This second and much lighter round of rain will exit by the evening hours for most of SW NC, however some moisture lingers along the TN line as we transition to a WNW flow across the mountains. This will usher in drier air, but
