Dry through Wednesday; Rain Thursday

Good Morning Folks! We start out the work and school week with temps in the low - upper 30's across the region, but temps will warm to seasonal levels and gradually rise to above normal levels by Wednesday, but nothing too hot for Halloween. As the high pressure system providing us with sunshine today through Wednesday slides off the coast Wednesday afternoon, a cold front will approach the region and develop light showers overnight into Thursday. Showers become widespread Thursday but the front will be quick moving and clearing skies should occur as soon as midday Friday, with more sunshine slated for the weekend. For those fretting over Halloween night plans, you should be ok as the bulk o

Passing Showers, Wet Snow and Below Normal Temps

Good Morning Folks! The tropical remnants of Wilma are passing overhead today (Thursday), while a low pressure system along the Gulf Coast moves east, eventually crossing the Florida panhandle tomorrow into Saturday. This setup will lead to widespread showers beginning late tonight, extending into tomorrow and winding down late Friday night. We don't expect a washout but there will be plenty of rain as most of SW NC picks up an inch from Thursday evening through early Saturday morning; highest amounts along the N GA line. A break in the action occurs Saturday, however an upper level trough moves overhead and funnels a piece of energy our way, combining with the lingering moisture from the de

A Chilly and Damp End to the Week

Good Afternoon Folks! We encourage everyone to enjoy the outdoors today and Wednesday as the pattern changes Thursday, with region wide showers developing and cooler temps setting up shop and not warming much as we move through the weekend. A large system will move nearby the region Thursday night and continue up the eastern coast with showers wrapping around the system Friday. A brief lull in the action will occur Saturday morning before another round of showers moves in late Saturday night, exiting sometime Monday. Temps all the while peak on Wednesday and then level off for the most part, going from the mid - upper 60's Wednesday afternoon to the low - mid 50's Thursday through Monday. Ov

Passing Showers; Widespread Frost

Good Afternoon Folks! We are enjoying a gorgeous fall day across the region and although a period of light rain moves through tonight and tomorrow morning, the next seven days remain very much fall like and at times, almost winter like. A cold front is expected to swing through the region early tomorrow morning, with light showers breaking out across the region around midnight, winding down sometime before midday on Saturday. Sunshine sets up shop Sunday and holds firm through the middle of next week with seasonal temps across the Southeast. All in all, the weekend and week ahead look pleasant and we should begin to see color change in earnest these next two weeks. Friday night brings us inc

Temps in the 30's; Showers Saturday

Good Afternoon Folks! This is a late Wednesday post, so the timeline of the discussion will run from tonight into early next week and for those who love cooler temps and the first widespread round of frost, this forecast is for you! Clear skies continue Thursday and Friday with temps slightly below normal, however a cold front swings through Friday evening and lingers long enough on Saturday to keep spotty showers going through the morning hours. Everything will clear out early Sunday morning but not before temps drop below freezing along the TN state line, prompting light snow showers to develop across the Smokies, Mt Mitchell and perhaps as far south as the Great Balsams. Dry conditions re

A Muggy Start to the Week

Good Morning Folks! We have light showers moving across the region today (Sunday) and coverage will wane as the day moves along, with a cold front slowly moving into the region tomorrow. This front will take till Tuesday to fully settle into the region and eventually will clear out late Wednesday as high pressure to the northwest sets up shop Thursday, resulting in a more fall like feel across the Southeast. Temps will go from the mid 70's Monday to the upper 60's Wednesday and dip slightly further Thursday to the mid 60's, holding there into the upcoming weekend. Rainfall totals will be light Monday through Wednesday, totaling a half inch at most for the area as this event will be weak at b

Rainfall and Wind from Michael

Good Afternoon Folks! Hurricane Michael made landfall at Mexico Beach, FL at 1pm this afternoon, with max winds at 155mph, just 1 mph shy of a category 5 hurricane. Numerous structures have been flattened and stripped from their foundation due to strong winds and a 6 - 12' storm surge, so please keep those along the coast in your thoughts and prayers. Hurricane Michael will continue its march across N Florida and S Georgia, sliding across the Carolinas tomorrow and exit the region late tomorrow night. Impacts to SW NC include gust up to 20 - 50mph tomorrow, more so along the ridgelines, rainfall amounts around 3 - 4" for the immediate SC state line including towns such as Highlands, Cashiers

Michael and Cooler Temps

Good Morning Folks! We kick off a new work and school week today with temps roughly 5 - 8 degrees above normal as opposed to the 10 - 15 degrees above normal we have been experiencing as of late, but moisture levels remain on the higher side of normal. Temps cool down a degree or two Tuesday, holding to the mid 70's across the lower elevations each afternoon through Thursday and by Friday a fall like airmass finally pushes into the region, ending the lingering summer setup! Of course the talk of the weather community is Tropical Storm Michael, soon to be Hurricane Michael, with an expected landfall somewhere along the Florida panhandle Wednesday. The National Hurricane Center has the system

Rain Chances Increase; Temps Decrease

Good Morning Folks! We'll retain the summer like conditions this weekend and although temps drop a handful of degrees as we move into next week, muggy and wet conditions will increase as Atlantic moisture pours into the area from the south and east. By the end of next week the models hint at the disturbance forming in the southern Gulf of Mexico to provide additional rains, however a cold front is expected to push the bulk of the rain out by next weekend, with a possible push of below normal temps into the Southeast by early next week! It's hard to temper the excitement we have for cooler temps, but anything on the models more than five days out should be taken with a grain of salt, however

Not Much Change; Hot and Humid

Good Afternoon Folks! Unfortunately we don't have much in the way of exciting weather news as the upper level ridges and associated high pressure system continue to dominate the pattern. A cold front is slicing through the Midwest as we speak but it doesn't look like it will dip south enough to impact our region. With this in mind, the pattern as of late will hold and we can expect temps to remain 10 degrees above average, both during the day and night and rain chances tick up slightly this weekend, but only maxing out to isolated chances. Generally this time of the year max temps should be in the mid - upper 70's across the lower elevations, with overnight lows dipping into the upper 40's -

Above Average Temps Linger

Good Morning Folks! Not much to talk about in the way of impactful weather, although one might argue the above normal temps could certainly impact some tourism companies as many plan for cooler temps this time of the year. Generally the valleys in SW NC should be experiencing afternoon highs in the low 70's, with overnight lows in the upper 40's - low 50's. For those who haven't been outside lately, we know this is not the case this go around as we deal with temps in the low 80's each afternoon after a much warmer start in the upper 50's - low 60's each morning. At the bottom of this discussion you will find a look at the 1981 - 2010 Climate Normals for Cullowhee, showing a dip to the mid 60
